I’m always amazed about people’s creative talent, whether it be interior designers or architects, bringing homes to life is a truly extraordinary process and very few people actually deliver on it. This job, well it’s one of the best that I’ve seen!

Townhouse Renovation:

Where

Caulfield, Melbourne, Australia.

Scope

Design, documentation and construction.

Brief

To transform an ugly duckling untouched for decades into a stunning representation of its industrial past as a part of Caulfield's Ice-works. This renovation project will breathe new life into the building, showcasing its unique history and heritage.

Maximise the usable interior space by adding an extra bedroom and bathroom, increasing the property's versatility and appeal, from a 2 bed/1.5 bath to a 3 bed/2.5 bath/1 study property.

Take all necessary steps to insulate the building from the noise generated by the nearby train line, ensuring that the residents of the property can enjoy peace and quiet. This includes installing new aluminium double glazed windows and doors with acoustic glass, adding new acoustic batt insulation throughout the building, and installing a street-frontage gate and carport door for visual separation.

Process

The full interior strip-back of the building to its structural elements served as an inspiration for the renovation project. The uncovering of the original brickwork, massive structural steel beams, and king-span trusses was deemed too impressive to be covered up, and as a result, the design of the renovation highlights these features, further emphasising the building's industrial heritage.

Excerpt

“Transformed by world class architectural design, state-of-the-art luxury abounds in this flawlessly renovated New York loft residence. The perfect synergy of sheer luxury, exemplary amenities & exquisite gallery like elements simply need to be seen to be believed. Polished concrete & engineered oak floorboards soften the voluminous interconnecting living spaces, including the sophisticated living room/fitted home cinema & en vogue kitchen with a suite of the latest Fisher & Paykel appliances, black fixtures & Caesarstone kitchen benchtops – both areas framing a luxurious double height atrium courtyard that looks straight up at the skies. Cathedral ceilings with exposed timber trusses, steel beams & exposed brickwork add character to the naturally lit first floor with incredible vaulted ceilings, including the breathtaking main bedroom with bespoke wardrobes, a sublime ensuite, huge second bedroom with built-in wardrobes, home office & incomparable bathroom.”

The most extraordinary renovation, probably the best interior renovation I’ve ever seen . . . to inspect that property was to fall in love with it.
